Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 12-9-08

December 9th, 2008 by CCCB Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Well I hate to say it but the fishing is going downhill fast! The water temps have fallen into the upper 50’s and that ain’t good. Fish are cold-blooded creatures and the colder it gets the slower they move. Now that don’t mean you can’t still catch a few fish either. Howards creek still has some Specks as well as Topsail creek. The Blues are still around as well as some nice reds in the surf. Black drum are possible too. Folks on these cold days try to find the warmest water possible because a degree or two can be all it takes. Deeper water will hold more stable water temps than the flats but the flats will warm up quick on sunny days. The fish will move up on a flat to warm up and maybe feed a little. Look for dark bottom or oyster bars and you might get lucky.
Offshore it’s been too rough to get out so reports are scarce as hen’s teeth. Most folks don’t want to brave cold temps and rough seas, not to mention risking their lives to go fishing. Hypothermia can kill in less than 15 minutes in some cases. Be safe if you do go out!  Pick your days carefully and tell someone when to expect you home.
On the hunting side, Duck season comes back in on Saturday the 13thand stays in till Jan.24th. Deer season is still in till Jan.1 around here so there is still time to bag a big buck or take a fat doe.
Most all of the small game species are in season till Feb. 28th except for Doves which is in till Jan. 12th. Heck, grab the 22 rifle and the kids and go see if you can’t find some squirrels or rabbits. While you’re at it do a little scouting as you wander through the woods. You shouldn’t have to worry about snakes either as cold as it’s been too. Well folks that’s about it for this week, so be safe and take a kid with you!
