Coastal Carolina Outdoors Report

March 17th, 2008 by CCCB Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Things are looking up folks, the water is around 60-62 degrees and will be getting warmer. Fishing is picking up with the reds biting in the surf and around docks back in the sound. The hot ticket is Specks in the New river. The mild winters we have had have contributed to lots of Trout and some of them are BIG! The word is that about all the creeks off the river are holding fish in the holes. Billy baits shrimp and Storm shrimp are what’s catching them.

Folks I’ll tell you what, these new scented artificial baits work a whole lot better than the old plastic baits. A lot of times they will outfish live or cut baits! Fish them the same way you usually fish. I personally like the Gulp pogeys fished on a Carolina rig just like the real thing. Now on to other things. The Grouper are tearing it up 25-40 miles out and the Kings are around the temperature breaks out in the same area’s. It shouldn’t be long before the Bonita start showing up on the reefs a couple of miles out. The Gulfstream is hot with Tuna and Wahoo now as well. Just be careful when you head out that far folks. North Carolina ain’t called the Graveyard of the Atlantic for nothing! The best thing I can tell you folks is to get out there and let the games begin!

On the hunting side or should I say the lack thereof. Turkey season ain’t far away so get ready. Mr. Longbeard is going to be strutting and gobbling before long. Maybe this will be the year we get a big one. Now don’t think they are easy to kill because I’ve been at it for a couple of years now and haven’t scored yet. I called one in last year but didn’t have a clean shot so I didn’t shoot. I probably could have killed him but it wasn’t a good shot so I did the right and ethical thing and let him walk. Heck it ain’t about the killing, it’s the adventure of trying to outsmart a critter in his home turf. I know people who go hunting with a camera and have just as much fun sitting in the woods and relaxing. Maybe everyone ought to take a little time out of the rat race and go sit in the woods and just be quiet. Leave the cell phone at the house or turn it off. Find a stump and chill for a while. No phones, no TV, no computers, just the sounds of nature and the occasional lowflying military aircraft. Well that’s it for this week folks so remember to be safe and take a kid with you.

NC Fishing, Hunting, & Outdoors Report

March 4th, 2008 by CCCB Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. The water is slowly warming up and now is the time to prepare for the upcoming fishing season. Fresh line on the reels, plenty of sinkers and swivels, leaders, and don’t forget to sharpen those fillet knives. Ain’t nothin’ worst than a dull knife, especially when you got a fat flounder to clean! There is still plenty of bait around and the water didn’t get that cold this winter so it should be a banner year for everybody.
I’ve been getting my boat ready for this season and I strongly suggest that you folks do the same. Don’t be the clown jamming up the ramp because you’ve got boat trouble. Just for everyone’s information BOAT is an acronym for Break Out Another Thousand! Check the trailer bearings and grease or replace them, check the springs and lights too! Charge the boat batteries and run it in the yard on the garden hose before you go to the water just to make sure everything works. Check out your electrical system, saltwater and electricity ain’t friends. Corrosion will prevent a lot of stuff from working. Just because it worked in November when you parked it don’t mean it will work now. Proper preparation will prevent frazzled nerves and attitude problems!
On the hunting side, Turkey season is coming soon and it won’t be soon enough for me. I’ve got to go back up to the mountains and do some more work to the hunting shack and I hate that! The worst thing is to just stand there and watch the deer and turkeys parade by! Hopefully we can do some population control soon. I get all giddy when I think about the possibilities. 2008 is already looking like a trophy filled year for me. Hey don’t just sit there go get your own trophies. All you got to do is get in the woods! Remember to take a kid with you. Till next week folks,be safe! Capt. David
