Headhunter Outdoors Report 4-29-07
April 29th, 2007 by CCCB PressHi folks, Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. The water is warming up and the fish are biting. Bluefish are everywhere now. The surf ,the sound, from the pier or a boat, they’re everywhere. I’m also hearing reports of some Flounder starting to show up as well. The bonita really did’nt get real close but some are around the liberty ship off Wrightsville and around Divers rock too. A few spanish are beginning to show up and are hitting the old Clark spoon and planer rig. If you don’t know what that is,go to the tackle shop! We have some very good tackle shops locally and some of the best local fishermen and women working for them. Help and advise are always free at any shop around.
Back in the sound the Reds are stirring around and are hungry. If you find a school try a Gulp bait on a jig head or a gold spoon. They are kind of spooky too sostay as far back as possible and cast to them. Some nice trout are being caught in the creeks up on the river. Capt. Rick Kellum out of Sneads Ferry tells me that the new Halo Shrimp made by Betts Tackle works real good on those big Gator Trout. Heck he caught a 9 pounder last week!
On the hunting side, Last week I had the priviledge to hunt some property on the N.C.-Va. border. Folks I’ve hunted all my life and I’ve never seen anything like this place. I sat in a ground blind on the first morning and saw 5 deer and 2 turkeys. One of the turkeys was a big gobbler,I called him in with a box call I made and had him at 30 yards. Perfect! Only problem was he was on the other side of a brier patch and I didn’t have a shot. I could see him! Beard about 10 inches long! Strutting around like a fool! No shot! Hey that’s hunting folks. It’s not the kill, it’s the experience of being in the woods. My buddy Chris had one sneak up right behind him and was looking him in the eye when he turned around. Scared the heck out of both of them. Neither of the three of us got a bird but we had a great time and saw a lot of cool stuff. The experience is the reason we need to take the kids outdoors. Show them that there is something other than video games and computers. The adrenalin rush of a big buck or ducks in the decoys can’t be simulated on a computer. Well thats about all for this week folks. Be safe and take a kid with you. Capt. David
