Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. the unseasonably warm temps we have had lately have a few fish moving during the heat of the day. I’ve been hunting up towards Permuda Island and have observed some nice school’s of Reds feeding in the late morning. The water temp in that area is around 60-61 degrees and there are some finger mullet schools along the banks that they are feeding on. They usually start feeding mid morning up on the dark bottom flats. Now don’t be doing the dawn patrol thing or you will be in somebodie’s decoy spread and nobody will be happy. Heck they ain’t feeding until I’m coming in about 10 o’clock anyway. Be nice to the duck hunters because they have been sitting and watching for hours and they might tell you where a school of fish are feeding. Some nice Specks can be had in the same area’s as well and there are plenty of Flounder around too. Fish a live bait under a cork in a couple of feet of water will tempt all of them. A word of caution, the water is extremely clear so long casts are necessary to catch them.

On the hunting side I’ve got a little bug to put in folks ear’s. I’ve heard lately of some hunters being harrassed by folks not respecting their right to hunt in some areas of the sound. A couple of incidents involved verbal confrontation. Most hunters obey the rules and regulations set forth by the N.C. Wildlife resources Commision and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We hunt in an approved and ethical manner and don’t like to be harrassed when hunting. Not to mention that North Carolina has hunter harrassment laws on the books. YES it is illegal to harrass hunters legally enjoying their pastime! I urge any hunter who has an incident to report it to the authorities immediately. By the way folks, it ain’t real smart to piss a guy with a gun off. Some folks ain’t as level headed as the rest of us. On the other hand if someone is trespassing on your property and hunting without permission by all means call the police. There are regulations as to how close a hunter can be to a house as well. I realize that if you live on the water around here you don’t want to be waken at daybreak to the sound of a 12 gauge but we only get so long to hunt and most of us hunters try to be respectful.

Saturday I enjoyed the pleasure of hunting with the legendary sportsman Wayland Batson and his dad. We did’nt get but a couple of shots but that boy can shoot! He’s already closed deer season beating out his dad and now he’s after me and duck season. Oh his dad can’t shot for #*%@ and did’nt hit anything. Wayland got a merganser and I got a pair of buffleheads. I’m going to have my buddy Chris Lee mount them for me. Give him a call for any taxidermy work you need. He’s good and his prices are reasonable. I’ve heard that a few folks are talking about Wayland being in the paper so much, Well send the paper a photo of your kid with their fish or game. It’s that simple folks. I like to put kids in my articles!

well thats about it for this week folks, remember be safe and take a kid with you! Capt. David
