Inshore we are catching flounder, red drum, black drum, gray trout, speckled trout, spots, croaker and Virginia mullet. In the surf people are catching lots of pompano, some flounder, red drum, black drum, blues, spots and Virginia mullet. On the piers people are reporting catches of spots, Virginia mullet, blues, croaker and black drum.
Off shore, people are catching king mackerel, dolphin and barracuda. On the bottom, people are catching black bass, groupers, snappers, grunts and ringtails.
This week’s fishing tip: Sometimes I have felt like going surf fishing for just an hour or two so I would take a small amount of bait but then after 30 minutes of good fishing, I’m out of bait.
But now you have “synthetic” alternatives to natural cut bait, bloodworms or shrimp. I have tried them and they do work. So now I always keep a few bags in my tackle box. Island Tackle and Hardware has a large variety of Berkley Gulps or Fish bites. Fort Fisher Trading Post also sells them.
Keep fishing and stay safe.

On the piers they are catching about the same as last week. Virginia mullet, flounder, bluefish, spots and croakers.
In the surf, people are catching pompano, flounder, puppy drum, Virginia mullet, black drum, bluefish, spots and sharks.
Inshore we are catching some nice red drum, black drum, blues, flounders, spots, gray trout, speckled trout and croakers. Offshore, they are reporting catches of barracuda, king mackerel, and dolphin and on the bottom some nice groupers, snappers, and black bass.
Fishing tip of the week is on setting the hook for inshore fishing. I have noticed a lot of my charters go into the panic mode when they have a small bit. As soon as the fish comes in contact with the hook, don’t jerk, jerk, jerk.
Let the fish pull and then set the hook. Keep the tip of the rod up in the air and reel in steady.
Enjoy the time it takes to land the fish. You will catch a lot more fish by not panicking when you get a bite.
Keep fishing and stay safe.
